The Austrian-Australian Club in Canberra is a fully commercial club providing bar and gaming facilities 7 days a week and a Restaurant for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Sunday night. Originating as a group of Austrians meeting to preserve their culture and heritage, make friends and share interests, the Club became a formal entity in 1970. Jacob Hafner was elected as the first President of the new Austrian Australian Club, with registration following in 1971.
A happy and thriving group of people enjoyed dances and film nights, snow trips, picnics and parties and at each the familiar red and white flags lining the venue helped recreate the familiar settings of the home land. With a never failing will to volunteer hard work and an undaunted spirit, the foundation members finally succeeded in obtaining land, and in July 1979 opened their own Clubhouse. |

These “pioneers” succeeded in putting heart and soul into the building of the club, and in forming a choir and folk dance group to keep alive the Austrian culture and heritage. But perhaps their major achievement was in having the courage and foresight, in those days, to opt for a fully commercial enterprise. It is this element of the Club which gives the greatest possible opportunity to keep the Austrian culture and heritage alive in our hearts, and to introduce it to the broader community here in Australia. |
